Photo’s by “Gion Aya”
If you visit Kyoto, you might be thinking about changing up to a Geisha. This is a very special experience to have in Kyoto. There are studios that make the person look just the same as the real Geisha. They do Geisha makeup, rent the Kimono, and rent hair accessories that the real Geisha are using. Not only Geisha, most of the studios are available to makeover to a Maiko. However, there are numbers of studios that do Geisha makeup in Kyoto. It is a big problem to be careful when you choose the studio. At this article, I would like to introduce the four best Geisha makeover studios in Kyoto.
Before writing about the best four Geisha makeover studios, there is a way to do Geisha makeup by yourself. The article “Geisha Makeup Tutorial – Do It By Yourself!“ that I have written, is an article that introduces how to do Geisha makeup by yourself, and where to buy the professional Geisha cosmetics. If you are interested in Geisha makeup doing it by yourself, please check it out. Maybe it might be a good for a Halloween cosplay.
Now, returning to the four best Geisha makeover studios in Kyoto, I would like to introduce Gion Aya, Maica, Yumekoubou, and Shiki from my research.

If you are looking for a various numbers of Kimono through the homepage or wishing to makeover to a Geisha, Gion Aya is the place you should select. Not only that, Gion Aya is showing a video of the Geisha makeover on the top page. It’s nice that you can first imagine how the flow is like, and understand the atmosphere the studio has.
Various Numbers Of Kimono
You can check the various types of Kimono from the homepage. This is the most different point from the other Geisha makeover studios. It is very nice that you can enjoy watching them even you are not at the shop. If you find the one you like, you can reserve the Kimono and dress up at the studio. When you’re in the studio, it takes time to decide which Kimono you might wear, but at Gion Aya there is no worry about this point.
There are too many of Kimonos, if you can’t choose the one you like it’s able to search from the colors.
No Extra Fee To Makeover To A Geisha
The second big point about Gion Aya is, that the plans are able to change to a Geisha makeover plan for free. Geisha wear an expensive Kimono than the Geisha. Because of the difference of the Kimono, other Geisha makeover studios have an additional charge. It is mainly free, but if you add ¥8,000-, you can select the real Kimonos that the Geisha are using.
Photo’s by “Maica”
Maica’s business hours are long. It opens at 9 AM to 7 PM, but the main office is open from 7 AM to 10 PM. It is open so early and closes so late. If you have questions or maybe taking reservations, it is convenient and helpful to contact. This helps very much because, if you are traveling from abroad you might have hard times contacting the studio because of the difference in time.
Various Areas For Photographing
At Maica, there are lots of places where you can take the photographs with the Geisha makeup. Not only that, Maica has the various types of studios to take different patterns of shots. They have a dancehall, tea ceremony room, the garden and the entrance that looks like a teahouse entrance.
By knowing where you can choose to take the photographs, it makes you imagine and think about what kind of photographs you would want to take.
Completely Free To Makeover To A Geisha
Maica is also totally free to change the Geisha makeover plan to a Geisha plan for free. It has no additional fee. If you are still thinking about which to makeover, Maica might be the right place to select.
Photo’s by “Yumekoubou”
If you are looking to go somewhere near the station or wandering about the plans, Yumekoubou is the Geisha makeover studio that you should check.
Industry Leader For Geisha Makeover Studios
Yumekoubou has the most subsidiary companies from the other three studios. As you can see, the top page shows where the studios are. There are five subsidiary companies; Kyoto Station, Gion, Kiyomizu Gojozaka, Kiyomizu Sannenzaka, and Arashiyama. The other Geisha makeover studios are mainly near Gion, so there is a limit to move around with the Geisha makeover. However, you can dress up to a Geisha and walk around enjoying different sightseeings at Yumekoubou.
Various Plans For Geisha Makeover And Other Makeovers
Yumekoubou shows the popular plans that are chosen. Not just only the Geisha makeup, Yumekoubou is putting effort to rental Kimono. It is very cheap to dress up to a Kimono. Also at this studio, it says almost every age can enjoy at Yumekoubou. Meaning by, there are plans for a 5 years old child to a 95 years old person to enjoy Kyoto with Kimono and the Geisha makeup.

By holding the studio for a long time, satisfaction is guaranteed at Shiki. You can feel the history through the staffs’ service and why it is popular.
Confidence Build Over Many Years
Studio Shiki has a reputation continuing the company for 35 years. You can trust the studio just from the years the studio is in business. Studio Shiki has two studios. Shiki Head Shop is for Geisha makeover, and the other studio is for rental Kimono. If you are interested in Studio Shiki, there is a detailed article “Best Geisha Makeover Studio Part I: SHIKI” that Ms.Shirasawa has written.
Studio Shiki has a different service from the other studios too. For example, Studio Shiki is showing the customer feedback to show how the customers felt.
There is plan for a couple at Studio Shiki too. This couple has done the plan that the man does the Samurai makeover and the woman does the Geisha makeover. It is nice to see the feedback and understand how the people have felt.
This is a comparative chart of the four Geisha makeover studios that I have made to make it easier to understand. This is the full price of the Geisha makeover. There are coupons on the website, so I would recommend going their website.
The Differences Between A Maiko And Geisha
Photo’s by “Gion Aya”
Almost all of the studios that I have introduced have Geisha makeovers plans too. The difference between Maiko and Geisha is easy to understand. Maiko is a person who is training the skills to become a Geisha. It takes about five to six years to become a professional Geisha. Maiko practices Japanese traditional dancing skills, singing songs, and the rules and manners to live in the Hanamachi (where they work). To people who are not used to watching a Maiko or a Geisha, there is an easy way to notice the difference between them by the appearance.
The woman with the light blue Kimono is dressed up with a Maiko makeup, and the woman in the black Kimono is dressed up with the Geisha makeup. Mainly, Maiko does makeup that is adorable and cute to show the youthfulness. They use the hair accessory to show the cuteness. You can tell from the difference of the Kimono too. The sleeves for the Maiko are longer than the Kimono the Geisha are wearing. This is to show the cuteness of the Maiko and also to show that Geisha are adults. At studios if you don’t like the Maiko makeup, you can add a little more makeup to show it more adult. In my opinion, the makeup that are done at the studios are more near to a Geisha to show it more beautiful rather than showing it cute.

The FAQ appeared on every studio website and noticed all of the questionnaires were different. You can say, choosing a studio is very difficult. If you have the vision what you want to do, then looking through the website or asking to the studio might be easier to understand. However, if you think this is the first and last experience to do the Geisha makeover, you might need to know what you are looking for is most important. It might be the cost or maybe the skills for the photographs or the location to the studio. Good luck for searching the best Geisha makeover that matches you, and please enjoy your Geisha makeover experience in Kyoto.
- Lived in the States for ten years. Now living near a famous sightseeing area; Arashiyama, for more than 15 years. Watching people and feeling the culture in two countries made another point of view for me.
